Fulcher of Chartres

   French priest whose Historia Hierosolymitana (A History of the Expedition to Jerusalem) is among the three most valuable and reliable Latin sources for the history of the First Crusade (q.v.). (The other two sources are Albert of Aachen and Raymond of Aguilers [qq.v.].) He was present at the Council of Clermont when Pope Urban II (qq.v.) preached the First Crusade in 1095. He accompanied the troops of Stephen of Blois, Robert of Normandy, and Robert of Flanders to Jerusalem (q.v.), and, after the city's conquest in 1099 he remained in the Holy Land as chaplain to Baldwin of Boulogne. Other Latin chroniclers, including William of Tyre (q.v.), relied on his work for the years 1100-1127.
